Woody Allen Gives Fans Another Reason to Feel Queasy About His Off-Screen Life

“The heart wants what it wants.”
Director Woody Allen’s famous line regarding why he pursued Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of then-girlfriend Mia Farrow, became one of those quotes that captures the pop culture zeitgeist.

“Where’s the beef?” did the same back in the ’80s, but that was merely a comical riff from a burger commercial. Allen’s [...]

?Rampart? Trailer: Woody Harrelson Makes the Bad Lieutenant Look Like a Boy Scout

From the moment I heard about Rampart the movie placed high on my ‘must-see’ list. The Messenger director Oren Moverman reunites with Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster to tell a story about the LAPD’s disgraced Rampart division, with a script originally written by LA crime master James Ellroy. Ice Cube is a good cop and Ned Beatty is in the movie, as are Sigourney Weaver and Steve Buscemi.

The movie has hit some festivals and I’m already hearing so much about how good Harrelson is in the film that I’ve just had to shut down all of the chatter until I get a chance to see the film. Rampart is scheduled for a limited Oscar-qualifying run in New York and LA starting next week, but most of us won’t get a chance to see it until January 2012.

There is a trailer right now, however, so you can get a taste of Harrelson’s performance as “the most corrupt cop you’ve ever seen on screen.” Watch it below.

The crunchy rock laid over this trailer sounds completely wrong for the movie, but that aside Rampart looks fantastic and Harrelson comes across like a total monster. Can’t wait.

Apple [1] has the HD version.
Los Angeles, 1999. Officer Dave Brown (two-time Academy Award(R) nominee Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing “the people’s dirty work” and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal seal his fate. Brown internalizes his fear, anguish and paranoia as his world, complete with two ex-wives who are sisters, two daughters, an aging mentor dispensing bad advice, investigators galore, and a series of seemingly random women, starts making less and less sense. In the end, what is left is a human being stripped of all his pretense, machismo, chauvinism, arrogance, sexism, homophobia, racism, aggression, misanthropy; but is it enough to redeem him as a man?

Just Say No: Joel Edgerton Passes on ?300? Prequel; Fox Won?t Make ?The Fly? Sequel; Rupert Wyatt Won?t Direct ?Londongrad?

The biggest news today has been what people won’t do, rather than movies they will. We started off with Steven Soderbergh’s withdrawal [1] from The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and now we move on to the fact that Joel Edgerton has said ‘no’ to 300: Battle of Artemisia, Fox has decided not to make David Cronenberg’s sequel to The Fly, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt won’t make the true-life ‘poisoned KGB agent’ movie Londongrad after all.

The 300 news comes from Variety’s Jeff Snieder, who said via Twitter [2], “UPDATE: JOEL EDGERTON has passed on the 300 sequel.”

The role was offered to Edgerton [3] at the same time that he was said to be up for one of the two lead roles in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. We’ve since heard that the U.N.C.L.E. gig may not have been an offer so much as a bit of agency machination, perhaps to try to massage the 300 deal. Either way the point is moot as U.N.C.L.E. isn’t happening for a while and Edgerton doesn’t want the role in 300: Battle of Artemisia.

And then there’s David Cronenberg’s sequel to his own 1986 film The Fly. News of that possibility first cropped up a couple years ago when Cronenberg was said to be writing and attached to direct a remake [4] of his own remake. But this fall he said [5],
The Fly is not exactly a remake, it?s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I?ve written a script of that, and I don?t know if that?s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.
Now there’s another update, as this week he told The Playlist [6], “I wrote a script and at the moment Fox is not wanting to do the project.”

That’s probably for the best — Cronenberg seems energized of late, or perhaps there is just money available for him to use. His new film A Dangerous Method is about to see release, and he is already putting the finishing touches on another, Cosmopolis. Hopefully Fox won’t foist his script off on another, less insistent director. I would have been ready to see what ideas interested Cronenberg enough to pull a Ridley Scott and return to one of his best films, but I really don’t want to see anyone else do it.

Cronenberg does continue to talk about a sequel [7] to Eastern Promises, which has been a conversation topic for a couple years. Steven Knight scripted a sequel and Viggo Mortensen wants to reprise his role as a Russian gangster. That one sounds a bit more viable, as Cronenberg said,
Eastern Promises might happen. There is a script that we all like, including Viggo, and Focus is interested.
Finally, while Warner Bros. was recently moving forward somewhat quickly on Londongrad, which tells of the mysterious death of former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko, who was poisoned in 2006, the movie has stalled a bit. That’s because Rupert Wyatt, who was briefly looking like the film’s director, won’t make it after all.

Fox wants Wyatt to get moving on an Apes sequel as fast as possible, and is pulling the contractual leash they’ve got on him. So WB might keep Londongrad in its pocket for a while until the next Apes movie is done, or might find somone new. Michael Fassbender was being courted to play the lead, but that might now change, too. [Deadline [8]]

Kirsten Dunst Joining Mark Ruffalo and Billy Crudup in ?Red Light Winter?

This past spring Mark Ruffalo said that he was looking at a role in Red Light Winter, a film based on the play of the same name by Adam Rapp (The L Word, Winter Passing), and a movie that would be brought into the world by Scott Rudin, the producer whose taste tends more genuinely toward the literary than almost anyone else working in the US right now.

Ruffalo told The Playlist [1] “it’s the story of a writer and his best friend, and a kind of crazy love triangle they get into,” and more specifically the play is about two thirty-something friends who fall for the same prostitute in Amsterdam. Ruffalo and Billy Crudup play the friends, and now Kirsten Dunst will be their shared obsession.

Speaking to Anne Thompson [2] in a video interview, Dunst said, “It’s a play, it’s called Red Light Winter, and it’s with Mark Ruffalo and me and Billy Crudup…and I get to play a prostitute,” adding that last note with a wicked, strange grin.

Rapp will direct the film from his own script adapting the play. We don’t know if details have been changed, but the premise and cast are interesting enough to get me interested. Here’s a bit about the play:
It’s totally familiar but dreamlike at the same time,” observes one American of Amsterdam’s notorious Red Light District in the stunning new work from Adam Rapp. Escaping their lives in Manhattan, former college buddies Matt and Davis take off to the Netherlands and find themselves thrown into a bizarre love triangle with a beautiful young prostitute named Christina. But the romance they find in Europe is eventually overshadowed by the truth they discover at home. Written with an unflinching poetic beauty, Red Light Winter is a play of sexual intrigue that explores the myriad and misguided ways we seek to fill the empty spaces inside us.
Red Light Winter will shoot in January.

Watch 17 Minutes of ?Raiding The Lost Ark,? A ?Raiders? Documentary

Odds are if you read this site, you are an incredibly huge fan of Raiders of the Lost Ark. It’s pretty much a given. If you love films, especially geek, genre films, then Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ introduction of Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones character is either right near, or the absolute epitome of, what this little art form we call “film” can do. It’s thrilling, it’s funny, it’s surprising, it’s pretty much perfect in every single way. Plus, it was released long before most of us were eating, drinking and sleeping our love of the art form. For that reason, whenever we can delve into the kind of trivial [1], behind the scenes [2] minutia that went into making [3] the movie, we have to call it out [4].

Or, you can now just get all that in one place.

Jamie Benning has been making documentaries, or “filmumentaries” as he likes to call them, based on our favorite films for quite some time. He brings together all the tiny bits of interesting insider information you’ve always heard about Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi [5], and now Raiders of the Lost Ark, and puts them in a well-edited, entertaining package that runs along side the main feature becoming almost a visual commentary on the movie. Raiding the Lost Ark is the title of his latest production and while it’s not 100% done, Benning has put the first 17 minutes online. Watch it after the jump.

Thanks to Wired [6] (via Movies.com [7]) for the heads up. Here’s the first 17 minutes of Raiding the Lost Ark.

Raiding the Lost Ark: A Filmumentary – Part 1 [8] from jambe davdar [9] on Vimeo [10].

When the full film is done, Benning will put it on line and we’ll make sure you know about it. If you can’t wait, though, you can revisit his Star Wars documentaries by clicking here [11].

TV Bits: ?Community? Gets Benched, Plus: ?Mad Men?, ?Luck?, ?Weeds?, ?House of Lies?, and More

[1]

There’s plenty of good stuff in today’s TV Bits, including new trailers for HBO’s Luck and Showtime’s House of Lies, which I’m hoping will help the one bit of really bad news go down a bit easier: NBC’s benching its highly praised but under-watched Community. After the jump:

NBC puts Community on hiatus and picks up new show Legends
HBO’s Luck, starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, gets a trailer
Showrunner Matthew Weiner reveals how he wants AMC’s Mad Men to end
Showtime renews Weeds and drops a teaser for House of Lies

First, let’s get the bad news over with. Perhaps the biggest news (at least for us pop culture nerds) to come out of NBC’s recent announcement of its mid-season lineup is the benching of Community, which has always struggled ratings-wise despite getting glowing reviews. The network stresses that the comedy is not cancelled and will be back on air soon, with the remaining episodes of the current third season airing sometime next year — but still, this does not bode well for the show’s future. Replacing Community in its Thursdays 8 PM timeslot will be 30 Rock, which has been on hiatus due to star Tina Fey’s pregnancy.

NBC’s mid-season shuffle will also see first-year comedy Whitney pushed from its cushy post-Office position to the much trickier Wednesday 8 PM spot, while Up All Night will move from Wednesdays to Whitney’s old Thursday 9:30 PM slot — where it should have no problem fitting in with all the other single-camera comedies in that programming block. Up All Night will be followed by the mid-season newcomer The Firm, which will replace the benched Prime Suspect. [New York Times [2] and Screened [3]]

Meanwhile, NBC’s looking farther down the road still with its recent acquisition of Legends, a drama pilot from former 24 showrunner and Homeland co-creator Howard Gordon and Homeland director Jeffrey Nachmanoff. Nachmanoff will direct Legends from his own script, which revolves around an undercover agent who dons “legendary” identities for his job, but comes to learn that what he believed to be his true identity may be a lie as well.

Nachmanoff’s previous credits also include the screenplays for Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow and the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring The Last Stand. [Variety [4]]

HBO has unveiled a brand-new trailer for Luck, its upcoming horse-racing drama from Deadwood creator David Milch and director Michael Mann. The series boasts an all-star cast that includes Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, among others. Watch the trailer below:

As we recently reported [5], the series will launch January 29, 2012, but it’ll get an early premiere Sunday, December 11 following the Season 2 finale of Boardwalk Empire.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to upcoming developments for Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce and its associates, but during a recent interview with Grantland [6] he offered up an intriguing tidbit about where we could expect to see the series ending in its seventh and final season: not with a fart, but with an 80-something Don Draper in the present day:
I do know how the whole show ends… It came to me in the middle of last season. I always felt like it would be the experience of human life. And human life has a destination. It doesn’t mean Don’s gonna die. What I’m looking for, and how I hope to end the show, is like ? It’s 2011. Don Draper would be 84 right now. I want to leave the show in a place where you have an idea of what it meant and how it’s related to you. It’s a very tall order, but I always talk about Abbey Road. What’s the song at the end of Abbey Road? It’s called ‘The End.’ There is a culmination of an experience of people working at their highest level. And all I want to do is not wear out the welcome. I was 35 when I wrote the Mad Men pilot, 42 when I got to make it, and I’ll be 50 when it goes off the air. So that’s what you’re gonna get. Do I know everything that’s gonna happen? No, I don’t. But I just want it to be entertaining, and I want people to remember it fondly and not think it ended in a fart.
The AMC drama’s fifth season will premiere March 2012. [via Videogum [7]]

A fun new teaser has dropped for Showtime’s upcoming series House of Lies, which stars Don Cheadle as a successful but self-loathing management consultant. Veronica Mars and Jean-Ralphio — I’m sorry, Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz — also star, with Josh Lawson, Dawn Oliveri, Glynn Turman, and Donis Leonard Jr. Check it out below:

[Deadline [8]]

And finally, Showtime has renewed Weeds, its longest-running series, for a 13-episode eighth season. Though the show no longer gets the acclaim it did in its earlier seasons, it remains quite popular — Weeds is the network’s most watched comedy. The new season will begin enter production and premiere in 2012. [Deadline [9]]

George Miller Explains the Genesis of ?Mad Max: Fury Road?

Where better to get your news of a new psot-apocalyptic action movie than through interviews to promote an animated musical sequel aimed at kids and families? George Miller directed the three Mad Max movies, and also oversaw the two Happy Feet films. As he does press rounds for Happy Feet 2, Miller is talking frequently about Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in his action series about a wasteland-hardened survivor.

Many of his comments so far have boiled down to “yes, the film was delayed when weather turned planned Australian desert locations to meadows, but it will still happen.” Today, however, Miller gave a pretty full rundown of the gestation of the fourth Mad Max movie, a process that goes back more than ten years.

Speaking to The Playlist [1], Miller talked about his reluctance to go back to Mad Max after making three films. But some characters are difficult to be rid of. “They’re sort of part of your family in a strange way. So like family, they keep on intruding.?

He elaborates,
14 years ago, I remember the moment when I was walking across a street, a crossing,? he explained. ?While I was in the middle of the road, I got this sudden flash of a story, and by the time I got across the street, I realized, oh my God ? that?s a ?Mad Max? movie! It was the core idea. The last thing I ever wanted to do was a ?Mad Max? movie, so I pushed it away.
But a few years later a story came to him while on a plane and he realized the Mad Max movie was going to happen whether he wanted it or not.

Miller confirms that Heath Ledger was part of his plan to make a fourth film in 2003, before the impending Iraq war rendered planned Namibia locations off-limits in the eyes of studio execs and insurers. That version died there. He also confirms that Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult are still set for Fury Road.

And as for Fury Road, the years of preparation have put it into a good position:
It?s a rigorously vetted film; I mean, the whole film has been prepared, storyboarded and so on. I?m surprised how little has changed [in the script] in that time. But these films aren?t really speculating about a future, they?re westerns in the same way that westerns would kind of morality plays, figures in the landscape, and you?re able to somehow reduce this human behavior to its most elemental. So now, it?s very clear to see the story in there where perhaps the modern world is a little bit too cluttered ? it?s a bit hard to see the signals amongst the noise.
So when does the movie shoot? Miller told Collider [2],
We were all geared up for [Fury Road], to shoot in the Australian desert, and then unprecedented rains came. What was the wasteland ? completely flat, red earth ? is now a flower garden. And the big, massive salt flats, where they do world record speed trials, is now full of pelicans and fish. Where the fish came from, I have no idea. So, we?ve lost the wasteland.. Theoretically, [the shoot is] next year. We have 150 big vehicles built. But, to be perfectly honest, [I just finished Happy Feet], and I?m not even there in my head, right now.

Bradley Cooper Will Not Be Steven Soderbergh?s ?Man From U.N.C.L.E.?

[1]

George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Matt Damon have all passed on the part, and now it appears Bradley Cooper won’t be Steven Soderbergh’s Man From U.N.C.L.E., either. The Hangover star was offered the lead role of American spy Napoleon Solo in Soderbergh’s big-screen adaptation of the ’60s series last month [2], but a new report says he’s now turned down the project. Meanwhile, the search for a star to play Solo’s partner, Russian spy Illya Kuryakin, continues. More after the jump.

The Wrap [3] (via Cinema Blend [4]) writes that Cooper has dropped out of talks to play Solo, despite Variety [5] reporting a few weeks back that Cooper was “likely to accept” after his agents had fought hard to get him the offer. Cooper would’ve been stepping into a character originated by Robert Vaughn in the original show.

But casting may not totally be back at square one yet. Vulture [6] reported last week [7] that The Thing actor Joel Edgerton could be playing Kuryakin, who was portrayed by David McCallum on television. As far as we know, Edgerton has neither accepted nor declined the offer at this point. Interestingly, their story claimed that Cooper was waiting to see whom Warner Bros. would cast as Kuryakin before committing to the project.

Solo and Kuryakin fought side-by-side as members of the international spy agency U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) for four seasons on NBC between 1964 and 1968, often battling an evil organization called T.H.R.U.S.H. (Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity). Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns have said that they would “take U.N.C.L.E. back to its roots” by “not moderniz[ing] the film and keep[ing] it set in the director?s beloved 1960s,” though an earlier incarnation of the project had Wedding Crashers helmer David Dobkin doing a comedic spin on the premise.

It doesn’t seem like a good sign that Cooper (and Clooney, and Depp, and Damon) has declined the role, though on the other hand, that could mean absolutely nothing. After all, Cooper’s busy enough as it is. The rising star has just wrapped The Place Beyond the Pines [8] with director Derek Cianfrance and star Ryan Gosling and is currently shooting David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook [9], with Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost lined up next.

Young Leonardo Da Vinci Action Movie ?Leonardo? in Development at Universal

Warner Bros. isn’t the only studio getting behind the idea of recasting the young life of Renaissance poster boy Leonardo da Vinci as an action movie. Last year, WB started working on Leonardo Da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever, written by [1] Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) from a pitch by producers Adrian Askarieh, Roy Lee and Doug Davison.

Now Universal has its own ‘young Leo’ film: a spec simply called Leonardo, by Jonny Kurzman, with Watchmen and Hellboy producer Larry Gordon producing.

Variety [2] says the Leonardo script is ” focused on da Vinci’s quest to stop Renaissance Europe from returning to the Dark Ages.” Presumably this will offer a chance to see some of the mathematician/artist/inventor’s mechanical creations in use. Will we also be asked to believe that da Vinci was secretly a master weapon inventor, too?

And, in case two competing young da Vinci films aren’t enough, Starz is also working on Da Vinci’s Demons, produced by BBC Worldwide. That is a TV series with a David Goyer-scripted pilot. Goyer will be the showrunner as well. Unlike the two features, this one is likely to happen, as Starz has given the show an eight-episode commitment and has loosely scheduled it for 2013.

Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits and Olga Kurylenko Join Martin McDonagh?s ?Seven Psychopaths?

Just a day ago I talked about Seven Psychopaths, the new movie [1] from In Bruges director Martin McDonagh, because Mickey Rourke had proclaimed [2] McDonagh to be a ‘jerkoff’ and refused to be in the film. McDonagh “wanted a whole lot for nothing,? the actor said, so he bailed.

Everything has worked out fine, as long as I’m concerned, however. Rourke is gone, but now Woody Harrelson has taken his role, and Olga Kurylenko and Tom Waits have also signed on to the film that already featured Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken.

Deadline [3] says that the film began production this week, with Farrell playing the main character, a screenwriter who is having trouble with his work. He’s implicated in some shadowy dealings of two friends (Rockwell and Walken) who may or may not have stolen a dog from a gangster (Harrelson).

How do Waits and Kurylenko fit in? No idea. I’d expect Waits’ role to be fairly small, but every once in a while (as in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) he ends up with a larger part to play, so there’s always hope that he’ll get some good screen time. And while Harrelson might not be exactly who some fans of the script might have seen in his role, I think he has proven that he’s more than capable of channeling a bit of psycho.

Here’s the synopsis for what is already looking like one of the films I’m really going to be excited to see in 2012:
From Oscar-winning writer and director Martin McDonagh comes a star-studded, blood-drenched, black comedy. Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay Seven Psychopaths. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty?s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy?s partner in crime. A religious man with a violent past. Charlie is the psychopathetic gangster whose beloved dog, Billy and Hans have just stolen. Charlie?s unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn?t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.
