Universal Planning A Second ?Wizarding World Of Harry Potter? In Hollywood

For years, Harry Potter fans dreamed of being able to enter his world. Then, in June 2010 [1], that dream became a reality when Universal Studios Orlando [2] opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a full themed land inside the park that features Hogwarts Castle, Hogsmeade, a few major rides and more. The park has been a massive success for Universal, helping to increase their attendance by millions.

Like anything that’s successful, Hollywood is now going to steal it. In this case, though, it’s an awesome theft. Universal will reportedly announce a second Wizarding World of Harry Potter at their flagship theme park, Universal Studios Hollywood, with doors opening as early as 2015. Read more about the deal, and how exactly this Potter-themed theme park will fit into Hollywood, after the jump.

The Wall Street Journal [3] first reported this news and The Los Angeles Times [4]reported the tentative opening date. Universal, who owns the Potter theme park rights, Warner Bros., who shares many of the merchandising rights, and Potter creator JK Rowling, who has creative approval over all of this, all declined to comment.

I went to Universal Studios Hollywood just a few short weeks ago and a few things struck me relating to this story. Most importantly, Universal is simply not worth its admission cost at the moment. At over $70, the park simply can’t compare to its competition like Disneyland or Six Flags. Most of the rides, even the newest ones, already feel dated. Yes, they have the new Transformers ride [5] coming in the next few months, and the world famous tram ride is always a blast, but the last two things to be added to the park  – The Simpsons Ride and the 3D King Kong experience [6] – both feel like standard definition in a high definition world. They’re fun, but with maybe 10 other worthy attractions and that’s it, the whole park feels very underwhelming.

So now you add in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It’s going to be great and a huge draw and that means the price will, of course, go up. However, I have no idea where this entire new world would go. Unlike Disneyland, Universal isn’t build around themed worlds, unless you want to call upstairs and downstairs themed worlds (several of the rides, including the new Transformers, Jurassic Park and The Mummy, are down a massive set of escalators that take 15 minutes to traverse). Adding a new world will not only change the dynamic of the park itself, it’ll make everything else seem very dated.

I’m all for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter coming to Universal Studios Hollywood. The news of it is some of the most exciting I can remember. However, Universal is going to have to really step up their game and think everything through before they jump into it.

Are you as excited for this as I am? Are you fans of Universal Studios Hollywood as it stands now?

Any time an actor on the verge of A-list status appears fully naked in a movie, some weirdness is bound to follow. Toby Kebbell, Richard Madden and Michael Pitt Testing For Tetsuo in ?Akira?

At this point I’d be lying if I claimed I knew what to expect from the live-action version of Akira that Jaume Collet-Serra will direct early next year. The film is budgeted in the $90m range [1] — not a lot to create a post-apocalypse future version of Manhattan in which motorcycle gangs do battle as a precursor to psychically-powered mayhem. We know that Garrett Hedlund is playing [2] Kaneda, a biker gang leader whose brother, Tetsuo, is wounded and finds his own psychic power awakened, leading to madness.

We don’t know who will play Tetsuo, but a new list of actors testing for the role includes surprising names like Michael Pitt, Alden Ehrenreich and Paul Dano.

THR [3] has the list, which includes:

D.J. Cotrona (Detroit 1-8-7, G.I.Joe 2: Retaliation)
Logan Marshal Green (Devil, Prometheus)
Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla, Control)
Richard Madden (Game of Thrones)
Rami Malek (The Pacific, Twilight: Breaking Dawn ? Part 2)
Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire)
Paul Dano (Cowboys & Aliens, There Will Be Blood)
Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro)

There are good names on the list, but without being able to even vaguely pin down what WB really wants out of this movie I can’t begin to guess what they’re looking for. Granted, I can see actors like Paul Dano (who is testing for the role again) and Michael Pitt playing an Americanized, older version of the classic Tetsuo character. They’d be able to present the physicality and the burning resentment that is key to the versions of the character that we know.

THR only describes Tetsuo as “the young man whose latent powers will release the powerful being known as Akira” and “a younger man with telekinetic abilities who becomes a dangerous weapon.” That’s a description that could match previous conceptions of the character, but it also leaves out anything that would specifically point out what is different in this movie.

Judging by the casting of Hedlund as Kaneda and Kristen Stewart as Kei [4], not to mention the switch to Kaneda and Tetsuo being brothers, a lot will be changed, and not merely with respect to race. (Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter also have roles.) I remain fascinated by this movie, especially viewed within the context of the fan bubble that wants it to simply wither and die. WB doesn’t care about that contingent, vocal as it may be. I wish I could say that the movie just has to be good — and with Garrett Hedlund in one of the leads I have trouble anticipating that — but it just has to look a certain way for people to show up on opening weekend. That seems to be what they’re really trying to assemble here.

Scarlett Johansson to Direct ?Summer Crossing?

Scarlett Johansson veered into directing in 2009 with These Vagabond Shoes, a short black and white film that starred Kevin Bacon as a man in search of a hot dog. The short was intended, by Johansson, to be part of the New York, I Love You omnibus film, but ended up being cut. (Producers said the short was cut because it was in black and white, while the rest of the film was in color, and didn’t feature an “interpersonal relationship” as did the other tales.)

Now Johansson is going to direct a feature based on a Truman Capote story.

The film will be Summer Crossing, an adaptation of the once-lost first novella by Truman Capote. Tristine Skyler, a screenwriter and playwright, is scripting. The plot goes like so: “Set in New York during the summer of 1945, this is the story of a young carefree socialite, Grady, who must make serious decisions about the romance she is dangerously pursuing and the effect it will have on everyone involved.”

We don’t know if the story will retain the period setting or if it will be modernized. The setting seems to be very specifically related to the story, so losing that aspect would be notable. But directing a period piece set in ’40s NYC as your first feature is also quite a task. We also don’t know if Johansson might play Grady, or if she will only direct.

Johansson has finished shooting The Avengers and We Bought a Zoo, and is now shooting Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin. After that she doesn’t have any projects fully booked, though there are rumors and suppositions that she’ll appear in Iron Man 3. So there’s likely time to shoot Summer Crossing in the summer of 2012 if things work out.

Superhero Bits: The Amazing Spider-Man, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, X-Men First Class 2

Want to read an in-depth interview with Joss Whedon about preparing The Avengers? How about vote on the reveal of a character from The Dark Knight Rises? Which major company now controls the merchandising rights to The Amazing Spider-Man? Want to poke and prod around Deadpool’s head? What does Michael Fassbender have to say about a sequel to X-Men: First Class? How do the artistic posters for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance look and what’s the latest on Powers? Read about all this and more in today’s Superhero Bits.

[2]

Comic Book Movie [3] has some new set photos of The Amazing Spider-Man reshoots.

Joss Whedon did an awesome, long interview with Yahoo Movies [4]. It’s not particularly revealing but has a lot of interesting insight into each member of The Avengers. For example, here’s Whedon talking about working with Mark Ruffalo. Head there to read about each other character:
Yeah, he and I did the most character work of anyone, because we really were starting fresh, but we were starting with something that had been embodied several times. And both of us agreed upfront that the template for who we wanted this guy to be in his life was Bill Bixby, the TV [show character] who was busy helping other people. That was more interesting to us than the Banner in the first two movies who was always fixated on curing himself. We spent a lot of time talking about what makes us Hulk out, the nature of anger, how it feels. We even fought some. I mean literally we actually got some pads out and did some tussling. Just to talk about the physicality, and also the physicality of somebody who has to control this thing, and the way he moves in space and the way he relates to the people and the objects around him. It was extremely fun. What we found was that he could be very bumbling and kind of awkward, but at the same time very graceful and in this almost transcendent control of himself.

Super was one of the most underrated movies of this year and Nerdcore [5] posted this bad ass German cover of the Blu-ray.

The team at What Culture [6] are feeling particularly venomous today as they list not five, not ten, but FIFTY reasons why Green Lantern sucked.

Yesterday’s Rogue has some hot, ass kicking, cosplay competition with Crystal Graziano’s Black Widow. Photos by Mike Rollerson from Geeks are Sexy [7].

Batman: Arkham City was nominated for 10 Spike Video Game Awards, trailing only Portal 2. Other major nominees included The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and other games that came out this week. Thanks to MTV [8].

Teefury [9] is superhero-themed today. And clever to boot.

A few weeks back we wrote that Sony gave up some of the merchandising rights for The Amazing Spider-Man. Turns out they ended up at Disney, which also owns Marvel. The plot thickens over at Comic Book Movie [10].

?The Expendables 2? Poster: Just Call it ?EX2?

I don’t have any belief that The Expendables 2 is likely to be the movie I hope it will be. After the first movie, I’m not even convinced that this sequel is fated to be a solid action movie. But magic can happen. While we wait to see any footage from the movie that Simon West has been directing in Bulgaria, here’s a poster that also acts as the best collage of aging action stars you’re going to see this year.

I can easily see some young action fan having made a similar version of this poster by collaging stills in the late ’80s or early ’90s. This one really ups the ante with leather, flying dirt and a lot of thousand-yard (well, maybe 400-yard for some of those guys) stares.

Check out the full poster below. Update: image has been removed at the request of the studio.

[Removed at the request of Millennium Films.]

Dammit, that makes me want to see the movie. Here’s what we know about The Expendables 2:

Sylvester Stallone is joined by Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Bruce Willis, and [1] Arnold Schwarzenegger. They will all punch and/or shoot things. As the poster reveals, there is also at least one woman, Nan Yu, in the movie. She will evidently also shoot and/or punch things.

The Story With The Best Documentary Short List Is, Once Again, The Snubs

Every single year come awards season, it’s always upsetting to see the blatant misfires on the Academy’s short list of films eligible for the Best Documentary Oscar. Just last year [1], the big story wasn’t so much that Exit Through the Gift Shop or Restrepo were up for the award, it was that films like Catfish, Best Worst Movie and Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work were snubbed.

This year it’s more of the same. Much more. Fifteen films have been chosen that will be narrowed down to five to tangle for the Oscar itself and on that list are several exceptional documentaries: Bill Cunningham New York, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory and Project Nim (above) just to name a few.

Not on the list, however are Constance Mark’s Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, Steve James?s The Interrupters, Werner Herzog?s Into the Abyss, Errol Morris’ Tabloid, Ian Palmer’s Knuckle, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Andrew Rossi’s Page One: Inside the New York Times, Michael Rapaport’s Beats, Rhymes and Life, Disney’s African Cats, Jon Chu’s Justin Bieber Never Say Never, Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam Twenty, Peter Richardson’s How To Die In Oregon, Mark Landsman’s Thunder Soul, Kevin Macdonald’s Life In A Day and, most notably out of all of those, Asif Kapadia?s extraordinary Senna. Just to name a few.

Those films didn’t make the cut. Read what did after the jump.

Here are the fifteen films eligible [2] to be nominated for Best Documentary on January 24, 2012.

?Battle for Brooklyn? (RUMER Inc.)
?Bill Cunningham New York? (First Thought Films)
?Buck? (Cedar Creek Productions)
?Hell and Back Again? (Roast Beef Productions Limited)
?If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front? (Marshall Curry Productions, LLC)
?Jane?s Journey? (NEOS Film GmbH & Co. KG)
?The Loving Story? (Augusta Films)
?Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory? (@radical.media)
?Pina? (Neue Road Movies GmbH)
?Project Nim? (Red Box Films)
?Semper Fi: Always Faithful? (Tied to the Tracks Films, Inc.)
?Sing Your Song? (S2BN Belafonte Productions, LLC)
?Undefeated? (Spitfire Pictures)
?Under Fire: Journalists in Combat? (JUF Pictures, Inc.)
?We Were Here? (Weissman Projects, LLC)

To be fair about my snub list, several of those films might not have qualified for a multitude of reasons. I know, for example, How to Die In Oregon wasn’t eligible because it played on TV at some point. Plus, several just might not have been good enough. Still, it’s a very extensive list of top notch films that won’t be recognized.

The Academy Awards happen on February 26, 2012. What do you think of this list, what will win and which films are you most surprised aren’t on it?

?Boardwalk Empire? Review: One Big Flaw Short of Perfection

HBO?s “Boardwalk Empire” is a hit. Many people are comparing it to “The Sopranos” in terms of style, substance and effect. And there is no doubt that in many ways, it is similar to “The Sopranos.” But there is one key difference which keeps “Boardwalk Empire” from being truly addictive.

Crazy Rumor of the Day: George Clooney and Noah Wyle Vying for Steve Jobs Biopic

[1]

As the source is somewhat less than airtight, you should probably take the following with the biggest grain of salt you can get your hands on — but on the off chance there’s some truth to it, this rumor is too wild not to repeat. A new report claims that George Clooney and Noah Wyle are vying for the lead role in the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, which is being developed at Sony based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling biography. More details after the jump.

The story comes from the UK tabloid The Sun [2] (via Cult of Mac [3]), which reports that the former ER co-stars are competing against each other to play the late Apple co-founder. There probably aren’t many times I’d vote for Wyle over Clooney, but in this case Wyle actually seems like the better choice. For one thing, he’s already played Jobs once, in 1999′s Pirates of Silicon Valley. (Joey Slotnick also starred, as Steve Wozniak, while Anthony Michael Hall played Bill Gates.) For another, while I’m usually in favor of casting Clooney in just about anything, the suave leading man seems like an odd fit for Jobs’ charismatic but prickly demeanor.

Of course, one very likely outcome is that it’ll turn out this entire report is BS and it’ll turn out that neither actor was ever seriously considered for the role. That the studio would be eyeing Clooney seems somewhat believable, if only because the biopic is bound to be big and Clooney’s the kind of huge movie star they might want on their top-tier team. But I’d be very surprised if the powers that be tapped Wyle — who’s doing just fine, but is hardly the first guy you turn to when you’re loking for A-list talent — to reprise his Pirates of Silicon Valley role. In any case, Sony’s scrambling to get the project together quickly, so expect to hear more casting rumors flying around in the coming weeks. Who do you think would be a good fit to play the tech legend?

Just for kicks, here’s a video of Wyle doing his best Jobs at the 1999 Macworld expo:

?Rampart? Trailer: Woody Harrelson Makes the Bad Lieutenant Look Like a Boy Scout

From the moment I heard about Rampart the movie placed high on my ‘must-see’ list. The Messenger director Oren Moverman reunites with Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster to tell a story about the LAPD’s disgraced Rampart division, with a script originally written by LA crime master James Ellroy. Ice Cube is a good cop and Ned Beatty is in the movie, as are Sigourney Weaver and Steve Buscemi.

The movie has hit some festivals and I’m already hearing so much about how good Harrelson is in the film that I’ve just had to shut down all of the chatter until I get a chance to see the film. Rampart is scheduled for a limited Oscar-qualifying run in New York and LA starting next week, but most of us won’t get a chance to see it until January 2012.

There is a trailer right now, however, so you can get a taste of Harrelson’s performance as “the most corrupt cop you’ve ever seen on screen.” Watch it below.

The crunchy rock laid over this trailer sounds completely wrong for the movie, but that aside Rampart looks fantastic and Harrelson comes across like a total monster. Can’t wait.

Apple [1] has the HD version.
Los Angeles, 1999. Officer Dave Brown (two-time Academy Award(R) nominee Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing “the people’s dirty work” and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal seal his fate. Brown internalizes his fear, anguish and paranoia as his world, complete with two ex-wives who are sisters, two daughters, an aging mentor dispensing bad advice, investigators galore, and a series of seemingly random women, starts making less and less sense. In the end, what is left is a human being stripped of all his pretense, machismo, chauvinism, arrogance, sexism, homophobia, racism, aggression, misanthropy; but is it enough to redeem him as a man?

Just Say No: Joel Edgerton Passes on ?300? Prequel; Fox Won?t Make ?The Fly? Sequel; Rupert Wyatt Won?t Direct ?Londongrad?

The biggest news today has been what people won’t do, rather than movies they will. We started off with Steven Soderbergh’s withdrawal [1] from The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and now we move on to the fact that Joel Edgerton has said ‘no’ to 300: Battle of Artemisia, Fox has decided not to make David Cronenberg’s sequel to The Fly, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt won’t make the true-life ‘poisoned KGB agent’ movie Londongrad after all.

The 300 news comes from Variety’s Jeff Snieder, who said via Twitter [2], “UPDATE: JOEL EDGERTON has passed on the 300 sequel.”

The role was offered to Edgerton [3] at the same time that he was said to be up for one of the two lead roles in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. We’ve since heard that the U.N.C.L.E. gig may not have been an offer so much as a bit of agency machination, perhaps to try to massage the 300 deal. Either way the point is moot as U.N.C.L.E. isn’t happening for a while and Edgerton doesn’t want the role in 300: Battle of Artemisia.

And then there’s David Cronenberg’s sequel to his own 1986 film The Fly. News of that possibility first cropped up a couple years ago when Cronenberg was said to be writing and attached to direct a remake [4] of his own remake. But this fall he said [5],
The Fly is not exactly a remake, it?s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I?ve written a script of that, and I don?t know if that?s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.
Now there’s another update, as this week he told The Playlist [6], “I wrote a script and at the moment Fox is not wanting to do the project.”

That’s probably for the best — Cronenberg seems energized of late, or perhaps there is just money available for him to use. His new film A Dangerous Method is about to see release, and he is already putting the finishing touches on another, Cosmopolis. Hopefully Fox won’t foist his script off on another, less insistent director. I would have been ready to see what ideas interested Cronenberg enough to pull a Ridley Scott and return to one of his best films, but I really don’t want to see anyone else do it.

Cronenberg does continue to talk about a sequel [7] to Eastern Promises, which has been a conversation topic for a couple years. Steven Knight scripted a sequel and Viggo Mortensen wants to reprise his role as a Russian gangster. That one sounds a bit more viable, as Cronenberg said,
Eastern Promises might happen. There is a script that we all like, including Viggo, and Focus is interested.
Finally, while Warner Bros. was recently moving forward somewhat quickly on Londongrad, which tells of the mysterious death of former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko, who was poisoned in 2006, the movie has stalled a bit. That’s because Rupert Wyatt, who was briefly looking like the film’s director, won’t make it after all.

Fox wants Wyatt to get moving on an Apes sequel as fast as possible, and is pulling the contractual leash they’ve got on him. So WB might keep Londongrad in its pocket for a while until the next Apes movie is done, or might find somone new. Michael Fassbender was being courted to play the lead, but that might now change, too. [Deadline [8]]
